Another incredible day. Train out of Rome at 9am. Arrive in Orieto in 90 minutes. We're into the Tuscanys and some beautiful scenery. The train doors would NOT open at Orvieto so we all went to the next stop, got off (the conductor had to unlock each set of doors), waited 20 minutes for another train going back to Orvieto.

Several blocks to Hotel Picchio, at the foot of the main hill to old town. This is 1000' above the valley floor and great views. Took bus 18k (11 miles) out through some very winding hilly roads to Bagnoreigo. Then walked about 1.5 miles out to Civita. About 14 residents, average age 80. Accessible by bridge. Pretty interesting location with a spectacular 360 degree view. Soft rock and lots of caves, burial tombs, etc. 5pm bus back to Orvieto, quick shower, climb the hill up to old town Orvieto, watched the sunset and had dinner. We shared spaghetti, ravioli, penni, and picata with some refreshments. Walked back down the rocky trail in the dark, but no problems as the hiking sticks gave each of us 2 more legs. 9 miles today.
Funny story. No body speaks English around here. We're in a caffe/store and Lee asks for
lip balm in his s'ern accent (it is really hot at this time of year) ... like the gal would have a clue what he was asking for. We then try to call home on a local phone using our phone card. All the responses are in Italian and we never could get the silly thing to work. So, another full day and everyone is thoroughly enjoying every moment.
